YOUR CHAMBER IN ACTION…

On February 19, President Blair Dunn and Executive Director John MacDonald participated in a round table discussion with Federal MP’s Hon. Gail Shea and Hon. John Baird. The Chamber shared its positive opinion of the stimulus program for PEI and that the committed stimulus funds should and need to be spent in 2010.
The Chamber’s 2010 key policy priorities were also discussed and the Federal Government ministers indicated that they would share this feedback with Prime Minister Harper and their fellow cabinet ministers as they plan for the Federal budget.

Also on February 19, President Blair and ED John (who also served as the MC for the event) represented the Chamber at the federal government announcement regarding the divesture of the City’s ports to Summerside Port Corporation Inc. It is intended that the transfer of the port directly into the hands of local interests will benefit the community and contribute to the economy for years to come. The Chamber looks forward to having an opportunity to provide input into the development of a long term business plan of the Summerside Port Corporation Inc., with the goal of making the port a valuable and viable asset for the community.

The Chamber was disappointed to hear of the recent announcement of the closure of the Davis + Henderson location in Summerside. This will lead to a loss of over 170 jobs for the community. The Chamber Board members and staff certainly empathize with the individuals who have been impacted by this decision. As one of the Chamber’s key policy priorities for 2010 is to attempt to bring jobs and economic activity to our area, we will be working hard over the coming months with various groups to try to bring additional jobs to the community.
